Does Your Home Make You Want to be a Better Person?

“Better” can mean to you whatever you need it to mean. For me, it means I want to do more of these things:

  1. Share my joy with others

  2. Create happiness

  3. Spread kindness

Home can actually inspire us to achieve a sense of deep fulfillment and connection with others.

“How?”, you may ask.

Just by listening.

Our homes speak to us in so many ways. If the daily chaos of life has shown itself in tangible ways such as clutter, dingy overlooked rooms, and uncertainty about how to proceed with your next home project, perhaps yours is telling you to slow down. Maybe it’s reminding you that something is missing, or that you’ve been feeling uninspired to accomplish your goals, or that you just need to do better at being present in your day to day.

When your home is offering this kind of advice, how do you follow-through? I suggest doing the following:

  1. Acknowledge your need as authentic. This was no accidental or whimsical arrival of a need. This is your intuition banging on the door asking you to listen.

  2. Let go of the “what-ifs”.  “What if I make another bad home decor purchase?” “What if I pick the wrong color?” “What if I don’t have enough money?” All of these objections can be addressed in one way or another. Don’t let them stop you from even proceeding with the next step.

  3. Make a list of how you currently feel in your home, and a list of how you WANT to feel in your home.

  4. Pick one thing you can easily change and go do it. It might be as simple as moving a chair from one spot to another.

  5. Prioritize your wants and needs for your home, and assign a dollar value to each.

  6. Pick your biggest priority and create a plan and a budget. (Our free budget planning guide can help.)

  7. Create a timeline to help you set realistic baby steps and expectations for completing projects.

  8. Record the small wins along the way. These wins will show up as achievements of the WANTS you listed earlier in step 3.

These steps are a key part of sorting through the overwhelming choices to create a home where you feel more connected to yourself and to what’s meaningful to you. Start listening to your home today to get advice on how to be your best self… and inspire others to do the same.
